The Short Version
Five things move the phone for a trades business, in this order: a Google Business Profile that's actually finished, reviews coming in steadily rather than in bursts, one real page per suburb you work in, a published price guide with your own numbers, and matching listings on the four directories that AI tools read. Everything else in SEO for tradies is detail.
We know the order because we went and checked. In September 2026 we ran a study on plumbers in Preston, Victoria — Google's results, its AI answers, and 25 ChatGPT responses to Australian plumbing cost questions. The businesses that got named had the same four or five things. The ones that didn't were usually missing the same two.
Why This Is Worth Your Time
"Plumber Preston" gets about 260 searches a month in Australia. Small. But the cost per click is $13.19 — the highest of five Melbourne suburb searches we checked, which also covered electricians, dentists, physios and accountants.
Advertisers pay that because the clicks become jobs. Which tells you what an organic position next to those ads is worth.
And the way people search has moved. Telsyte's Australian Artificial Intelligence Study 2026 found 12% of Australians now name AI as their primary way to find information online, up from 5% a year earlier. A Sagapixel study reported by Search Engine Land found 75% of ChatGPT sessions about local services used keyword-style searches — "plumber Preston", not a chatty paragraph. People type the same words into ChatGPT that they type into Google, then act on whatever comes back.
1. Finish the Google Business Profile
This is the whole ball game for most trades and it's half-done on nearly every profile we open.
Primary category set precisely — "Plumber", not "Contractor". Every service listed as its own entry rather than lumped into the description. Service area set to the suburbs you'd actually drive to on a Tuesday, not "Melbourne and surrounds". Photos from real jobs, not stock.
Hours that are true, including whether you take after-hours calls. A business that says it closes at 5pm doesn't surface for a 7pm search.
Nothing else on this list produces a call as fast as a finished profile. If you stop reading here, you've still got the best of it.
2. Get Reviews Steadily, and Make Them Specific
In the Preston results, Local Plumber Preston's listing showed 4.7 stars from 285 reviews before anyone clicked anything. In every other trade search we looked at (air conditioning in Deer Park, bathroom renovators across several cities) the rating and review count sat immediately next to the business name in the AI answer itself.
Reviews stopped being social proof on your website. They're part of the answer now.
Two things matter beyond the count. Steadiness, because forty reviews in one week and nothing for eight months reads as a campaign. And specificity: ask the customer to mention the job and the suburb in their own words. "Replaced our hot water system in Reservoir, came same day" is worth more to a search engine than "great service, highly recommend".
Ask after every job. Not once a year when someone remembers.
3. One Real Page Per Suburb
Here's the finding that surprised us.
We tracked a Google AI Overview for "sink installation preston". It cited six Australian business pages. Four of them were Preston suburb pages, with "preston" in the URL. One was a how-to guide for the exact job. One was a write-up of a single kitchen and laundry job done in Preston.
Not one was a generic "our services" page.
So suburb pages work. But the ones that work are real. A page about Preston should carry three or four actual jobs you did there, with photos and the problem you solved. The local housing stock matters too. Preston's shifting from older single-storey homes to townhouses, and that changes what breaks. Mention the streets and landmarks you work around.
Fifty pages with the suburb name swapped out is a doorway-page pattern. Google has handled those for fifteen years, and it will hurt you. Four good ones beat fifty thin ones, and it isn't close.
There's a wider point here. In the organic Preston results, several of the directory listings Google surfaced were for neighbouring suburbs: Thornbury, Campbellfield, Heidelberg West, Watsonia. Google reached sideways because there weren't enough strong Preston pages to fill the page. That gap exists in most Melbourne suburbs right now.
4. Publish Your Own Prices
The 25 ChatGPT answers we reviewed on Australian plumbing costs cited hipages, Yellow Pages, Quotcha, Going Rate, What's the Damage and Fair Work award documents.
Not a single individual plumber's website.
Meanwhile almost every one of those answers ended by asking for the user's suburb or city so it could narrow the range down.
Read those two facts together and the opportunity is obvious. ChatGPT is already answering "how much does a plumber charge per hour in Australia" using somebody else's numbers, and it's actively looking for local detail it doesn't have. A page on your site with real ranges from your own invoices, call-out fee, blocked drain, hot water replacement, switchboard upgrade, gives it exactly that.
Most tradies won't do this. That's the point.
5. Match Your Directory Listings
hipages, Yellow Pages, Word of Mouth, Airtasker and Localsearch showed up over and over, both in Google's results and as ChatGPT's cited sources.
Claim each one. Then make the name, phone number and one-line description identical across all of them and your website. Not similar. Identical.
AI systems assemble a picture of your business from fragments. When the fragments disagree about your phone number, you get described vaguely or skipped. This is boring work and it takes an afternoon.
Where SEO Won't Help You
We should say this, since we sell SEO.
Emergencies don't go through search the way you'd hope. Burst pipe, blocked toilet, no hot water in July. Nobody asks Gemini for a considered shortlist. They tap the first number on the screen. For that work, Google Ads and the map pack bring calls in faster than any page you publish this month.
If you're not registered or insured properly, stop here. A better ranking on a business that can't take the work is a worse outcome, not a better one.
And if you're a sole trader booked out eight weeks ahead, more leads aren't the problem. Pricing is. We tell a reasonable number of tradies this on the first call.
SEO pays on the planned work: hot water replacements, bathroom rough-ins, gas fitting, renovations, switchboard upgrades. The jobs people research for a week before they ring anyone. Most trades businesses need both channels, and the split is usually closer to even than people expect. Our guide to SEO versus Google Ads in Melbourne works through how to decide.
What We'd Do First, If You Only Had a Month
Week one: finish the Google Business Profile properly and claim the four directories.
Week two: write one suburb page for the area that sends you the most work, with real jobs in it.
Week three: publish the price guide.
Week four: set up the review request so it goes out after every job automatically, and run a handful of prompts in ChatGPT and Google to see who gets named in your category. Record the date. That's your baseline.
Then repeat the suburb page monthly. One a month, done properly, beats ten done in a weekend.
If you'd rather see where you currently stand before doing any of it, we'll run a free AI visibility audit, twenty real customer prompts across ChatGPT, Gemini, Perplexity and Google's AI answers, dated, and you keep the results either way. Our SEO and local SEO guide for Melbourne businesses cover the longer game.
Frequently Asked Questions
What is SEO for tradies?
SEO for tradies helps your business appear in Google and AI search results when people look for trade services in your area. It includes optimising your Google Business Profile, collecting reviews, creating suburb pages, publishing prices, and maintaining consistent directory listings.
How long does SEO take to work for a trades business?
Google Business Profile improvements can generate calls within a fortnight. Suburb pages and organic rankings typically take three to six months to settle. AI visibility can also take three to six months to improve.
Do suburb pages still work for tradies?
Yes, genuine suburb pages can help your business rank for local searches. Include real jobs, project photos, and details about the services you provide in each area. Avoid creating multiple near-identical pages by changing only the suburb name.
Is Google Ads or SEO better for tradies?
Google Ads is effective for emergency and urgent jobs, while SEO helps attract customers researching planned, higher-value work. Using both channels can help your business generate immediate enquiries and build long-term organic visibility.
How many reviews does a trades business need?
There is no fixed number of reviews required. Focus on collecting reviews consistently and encouraging customers to describe the job and suburb in their own words. Specific, genuine reviews help build trust and strengthen your local presence.
Should tradies publish their prices online?
Yes. Publishing honest price ranges, call-out fees, and common job costs helps customers understand your pricing before contacting you. It can also provide useful local information for search engines and AI tools.
Which directories matter most for Australian tradies?
Important directories include hipages, Yellow Pages, Word of Mouth, Airtasker, and Localsearch. Keep your business name, phone number, and description consistent across these listings and your website.
Can I do trades SEO myself or do I need an agency?
You can handle many SEO basics yourself, including updating your Google Business Profile, requesting reviews, claiming directory listings, and creating useful suburb pages. An SEO agency can help with technical optimisation, link building, and performance tracking.
Why isn't my trades business showing up in ChatGPT?
Your business may have limited online information, few reviews, inconsistent directory listings, or a website with insufficient service details. Build a consistent online presence with useful content and accurate business information to improve your chances of being discovered by AI tools.
What's the first thing a tradie should fix?
Start with your Google Business Profile. Choose the correct primary category, list each service separately, set your actual service areas, upload real job photos, and keep your opening hours accurate, including after-hours availability.
