How to Appear in Google AI Overviews

To appear in Google AI Overviews, you need three things: a page Google already ranks reasonably for the query, a passage on that page that answers the question directly in one or two sentences, and enough corroboration elsewhere that Google trusts the source. AI Overviews draws almost entirely from pages already in the index — it isn't a separate ranking system you can enter from outside.

That's the mechanism. Here's why it's the thing to work on.

Why AI Overviews Beats ChatGPT for Australian Businesses

Almost every conversation we have about AI visibility starts with ChatGPT. The data says that's the wrong priority.

In October 2026 we pulled AI citation counts for Online Marketing Gurus, the strongest Australian marketing agency in the dataset. Across the five engines that can currently be tracked:

Engine Times the brand was named Times a page was cited
AI Overviews 661 2,397
Google AI Mode 178 347
ChatGPT 183 185
Perplexity 36 119
Gemini 18 2

AI Overviews produced thirteen times the page citations ChatGPT did. The same shape held for every domain we checked, international ones included.

There's a second reason it deserves the attention. The work that wins AI Overviews is largely the work that wins ordinary Google rankings. You're not building a parallel programme — you're sharpening the one you have. That's less exciting than a dedicated "AI visibility strategy" and it's where the return actually is.

Boost Your Visibility in Google AI Overviews

The Prerequisite Nobody Mentions

AI Overviews cites pages Google already ranks.

Not exclusively — Google occasionally reaches deeper into the index for a specific passage. But overwhelmingly, the cited pages are ones sitting in the top 10 to 20 for that query or a close variant.

Which means if you're on page four, "optimising for AI Overviews" isn't your problem. Ranking is. Everything below assumes you're already somewhere in contention.

This is the single most common misunderstanding we encounter, and it's the thing businesses waste the most money on — chasing AI visibility before they're findable at all. Thin site, six reviews, no third-party mentions, and then surprise that Google's AI doesn't name them. We wrote the long version in why your business isn't showing up in AI search results.

The Passage Is the Unit

Google doesn't cite pages. It cites passages, then links the page the passage came from.

So the question to ask about any page is: is there a block of text here that could be lifted out, stand alone, and still be true and useful?

Most business writing fails that test. It builds toward a point across four paragraphs. By the time the answer arrives it's loaded with context the reader has but the extractor doesn't.

Three changes fix most of it.

Answer in the first sentence under the heading. The heading poses the question, the next sentence answers it. Everything else is elaboration. If you read only the heading and the sentence after it, you should have the answer.

Keep it to 40 to 60 words. That's roughly the length Google lifts. Longer and it gets truncated somewhere awkward; shorter and it often doesn't carry enough.

Stop hedging. "There are a number of factors that can affect how long SEO takes" gives an extractor nothing. "SEO typically takes three to six months to produce measurable ranking change for a Melbourne service business" gives it a sentence it can use. Hedged writing feels safer and it's invisible.

Turn AI Search Visibility Into More Leads

Match the Format to the Question Type

Google formats AI Overviews differently depending on what's being asked, and matching the format improves your odds noticeably.

"How do I..." questions get ordered lists. Write numbered steps, each one a single action with a clear outcome.

"What is..." questions get a paragraph. Lead with "[Term] is..." and no preamble.

Comparison questions, "X vs Y", "which is better", get tables. Build one.

"How much..." questions get ranges with conditions attached. Give actual numbers and say what changes them.

We've watched pages gain AI Overview citations from nothing more than restructuring an existing section into a numbered list, because the query was a "how" query and the content was prose.

The Structured Data That Helps

Schema doesn't get you into an AI Overview by itself. What it does is remove ambiguity about what your page says, which makes extraction more reliable.

Worth having: FAQPage on any page with a genuine Q&A section, Article with a valid ISO 8601 datePublished, BreadcrumbList so the page's position is unambiguous, and Organization with sameAs pointing at every profile you control.

One warning from our own site. For several weeks our blog template emitted datePublished as a JavaScript date string, "Tue Sep 22 2026 03:30:00 GMT+0000", instead of ISO 8601. Google can't parse that. Every post on the site had an unreadable publication date and nobody noticed because nothing visibly broke. Check yours in the Rich Results Test.

Getting Corroborated

Google decides whether to trust your passage partly on whether anything outside your site agrees with it.

For a local business, that corroboration comes from a finished Google Business Profile, consistent listings across directories, genuine reviews, and mentions on sites you don't control, local press, industry bodies, supplier pages, community listings.

This is unglamorous and it's the half that agencies skip because it can't be done in a content management system. It's also, in our experience, the difference between a technically excellent page that never gets cited and an ordinary one that does.

What It Costs You in Traffic

Honest caveat, since we're recommending the work.

Appearing in an AI Overview doesn't guarantee a visit. A proportion of users read the answer and stop. For informational queries especially, being cited can mean visibility without clicks. Your brand in front of the user, but no session in Analytics.

That's a real trade-off and anyone telling you AI Overview citations are purely upside is selling something. What it does reliably deliver: your name appearing at the moment of decision, and a click from the users who want detail. For commercial queries, where someone is choosing a supplier rather than looking up a definition, the click-through holds up far better.

Our view is that it's worth doing because the alternative is a competitor's name in that position. But go in knowing the shape of it.

How to Check Whether It's Working

Search Console doesn't separate AI Overview impressions from ordinary ones, so there's no clean report.

What you can do: take your 20 most important queries, run each one in Google with a Melbourne location set, and record whether an AI Overview appeared, whether you were cited, and which pages were. Date it. Repeat monthly.

Ninety minutes, and it's the only number that can't be massaged. That's the same method we use in our free AI visibility audit, extended across ChatGPT, Gemini and Perplexity. Our AI marketing and SEO pages cover the service, and what AI SEO actually is sets out the wider picture.

Frequently Asked Questions

How do I get my business into Google AI Overviews?

Three requirements. The page needs to already rank reasonably for the query, since AI Overviews draws almost entirely from pages in the top 10 to 20. It needs a passage of 40 to 60 words that answers the question directly in the first sentence under a heading. And the business needs corroboration elsewhere, reviews, directory listings, mentions you don't control.

Do I need to rank on page one to appear in an AI Overview?

Not strictly page one, but you need to be in contention. The overwhelming majority of cited pages sit in the top 10 to 20 results for the query or a close variant. If a page is on page four, ranking is the problem to solve first, AI Overview optimisation won't pull it in from there.

How long is a passage that gets cited in an AI Overview?

Roughly 40 to 60 words. Shorter passages often lack enough substance to be useful; longer ones get truncated at an awkward point. Place it immediately after the heading that poses the question, written so it still makes sense when lifted out of the surrounding page.

Does schema markup help with AI Overviews?

Indirectly. Structured data doesn't earn a citation on its own, but it removes ambiguity about what a page contains, which makes extraction more reliable. FAQPage, Article with a valid ISO 8601 publication date, BreadcrumbList and Organization with sameAs are the ones worth having. Validate them, since broken schema is common and silent.

Will appearing in AI Overviews reduce my website traffic?

Sometimes, yes. A proportion of users read the answer and don't click, which hits informational queries hardest. Commercial queries hold up far better, because someone choosing a supplier wants more detail than a summary provides. The trade-off is visibility at the moment of decision against some lost sessions, and the alternative is a competitor occupying that space.

How is AI Overviews different from Google AI Mode?

AI Overviews appears above the normal results for a conventional search. AI Mode is a separate conversational interface where the entire experience is generated. Both draw on Google's index and respond to the same optimisation work, but AI Mode produced far fewer citations in our October 2026 Australian data, 347 against 2,397 for AI Overviews.

Can I opt out of Google AI Overviews?

Only by blocking Google's access to your content through nosnippet, max-snippet or data-nosnippet, which also removes your ordinary search snippets and usually costs more traffic than it saves. Google-Extended controls training use, not AI Overview appearance. In practice, opting out isn't a realistic option for a business that wants search traffic.

Which content formats get cited most often in AI Overviews?

Format follows the question. "How" queries produce ordered lists, so write numbered steps. "What is" queries produce paragraphs, so lead with a definition. Comparison queries produce tables, so build one. Cost queries produce ranges with conditions. Matching your page structure to the query type measurably improves the odds.

How do I track whether I'm appearing in AI Overviews?

There's no report for it. Search Console doesn't separate AI Overview impressions. The workable method is manual: take your 20 most important queries, run each in Google with your location set, and record whether an overview appeared, whether you were cited, and which pages were. Date the results and repeat monthly.

Is optimising for AI Overviews different from normal SEO?

Mostly it isn't, which is the part that rarely gets said. Technical health, page structure, authority and third-party corroboration all carry over directly. What's genuinely additional is the passage-level writing discipline, direct answers under headings, 40 to 60 words, no hedging. And matching page format to query type.
