What Is AI SEO, and How Is It Different From Normal SEO?

12 October 2026 · InfloMedia

What Is AI SEO?

AI SEO is the work of getting your business named and linked inside AI-generated answers — ChatGPT, Google's AI Overviews and AI Mode, Gemini, Perplexity, Claude and Grok — rather than only inside the ten blue links underneath them.

That's the definition. The useful part is what it isn't.

AI SEO is not a separate discipline that replaces search engine optimisation. It's SEO plus three specific additions: crawler access beyond Googlebot, entity consistency across the places that describe your business, and content written so a machine can lift a passage out of it without mangling the meaning. Everything else an "AI SEO" proposal contains is usually ordinary SEO with a new label on the invoice.

Why Anyone Cares Yet

Telsyte's Australian Artificial Intelligence Study 2026 puts 17.4 million Australians aged 16 and over on AI tools — 77% of that population. The number that actually matters for a business owner is smaller and sharper: 12% now name AI as their primary way to find information online, up from 5% the year before.

One in eight. Not a majority. Not nothing either, and the direction is the whole story.

ChatGPT has 13.8 million Australian users, Gemini 9.1 million, Claude 2.9 million. For comparison with all the noise about Grok, it sits at roughly 2.5 million here.

So the honest framing is: this is not where most of your enquiries come from today, and it is where a growing slice of your highest-intent research happens before anyone fills in a form.

What AI SEO Actually Involves

Four things, in the order they matter.

1. Letting the crawlers in

Every AI system reads the web through named user agents. The ones worth checking in your robots.txt and your firewall rules:

  • OpenAI: GPTBot (training), OAI-SearchBot (search index), ChatGPT-User (fetches a page when someone asks)
  • Google: Googlebot, plus Google-Extended which governs whether your content can be used for Gemini and AI training
  • Anthropic: ClaudeBot (training), Claude-User (user-initiated fetch), Claude-SearchBot (search indexing)
  • Perplexity: PerplexityBot, Perplexity-User

Most sites aren't blocking these in robots.txt. Plenty are blocking them at the firewall without knowing it — Cloudflare and several Australian hosts added AI-bot blocking as a default toggle, and nobody told the marketing team. Check both. The robots.txt file is the easy half.

xAI is the odd one out. It publishes no crawler documentation at all. Bot directories list GrokBot and xAI-Bot, but Grok's retrieval often fetches without identifying itself, so a robots.txt rule is not a reliable control in either direction.

2. Being the same business everywhere

AI systems assemble an answer from fragments scattered across your site, your Google Business Profile, directories, review platforms and anywhere else your name appears. If those fragments disagree, you get described vaguely or not at all.

Same legal and trading name. Same address format. Same phone number. Same service descriptions. Then connect them: sameAs in your structured data, pointing at every profile you control.

This is tedious and it is the single most underdone item on most Australian small-business sites.

3. Writing so a passage can be lifted

AI answers don't quote whole pages. They lift a sentence or a short block and attribute it.

Which means the shape of a paragraph decides whether it gets used. A direct answer in the first sentence under a heading gets extracted. The same information, arrived at gradually over four paragraphs, does not.

Hedging kills it too. "There are many factors that can influence pricing" gives a model nothing to extract. "Google Ads management in Melbourne is typically billed as a monthly fee separate from ad spend" gives it a sentence it can use.

4. Getting indexed outside Google

ChatGPT and Copilot read Bing's index, not Google's. If you've never touched Bing Webmaster Tools, your site may be thin or absent there regardless of how it performs on Google. Submit the sitemap, turn on IndexNow, check the index count.

Takes twenty minutes. It's the highest return-per-minute task in this whole article.

What the Numbers Look Like in Australia

We pulled AI citation data for a set of Australian and international marketing agencies in October 2026. Brand presence counts how often a brand is named in AI answers; link presence counts how often a page is actually cited.

Domain Brand presence Link presence
semrush.com 15,531 26,742
onlinemarketinggurus.com.au 1,076 3,050
impressivedigital.com 572 8
webprofits.com.au 12 42
inflomedia.com.au 0 0

Three things in that table are worth more than the rest of this article.

Being named and being cited are different outcomes. Impressive Digital gets mentioned 572 times and cited 8. Mentions come from third-party lists and directories. Citations come from your own pages being extractable. You need both, and they're built differently.

A well-known agency can be nearly invisible. Web Profits has been operating in Australia for well over a decade and scores 12 and 42. This is winnable in a way that outranking Semrush on Google is not.

We score zero. Twenty-two published articles, a full service-page build, and no measurable AI citations yet. We're publishing that because the alternative is pretending otherwise, and because a baseline of zero is still a baseline. It's the only thing that will make November's number mean anything.

The Engine That Actually Matters Here

Most of the conversation about AI visibility in Australia is about ChatGPT. The data says otherwise.

For Online Marketing Gurus, the strongest Australian agency in the dataset, AI Overviews produced 2,397 link citations. ChatGPT produced 185. Google AI Mode produced 347. Gemini produced 2.

AI Overviews carries roughly thirteen times ChatGPT's citation volume for an Australian agency. And it's won with the same work that wins ordinary Google rankings, which is the part most AI-SEO pitches skip past, because "it's mostly SEO" doesn't sell as well.

If you only do one thing from this article, do the thing that helps AI Overviews. That's technically sound pages, direct answers under headings, and enough authority that Google trusts the source.

Where AI SEO Won't Help You

Said plainly, because we sell this service and it would be convenient to skip.

If your buyers decide in under a minute. Burst pipe at 9pm, locksmith, emergency electrician. Nobody asks Gemini for a considered shortlist while water comes through the ceiling. Put the money into Google Ads and the map pack.

If there's nothing about you to synthesise. A thin site, four reviews, no mentions you don't control. AI systems assemble from what exists. When little exists, you get omitted rather than described badly. The honest sequence is conventional SEO and reputation work first, which we cover in why businesses don't show up in AI search.

If you need leads this quarter. AI visibility moves on a three-to-six-month horizon. Paid media moves this week.

How to Tell Whether It's Working

There's no Search Console for this. No tool shows you what ChatGPT said about you yesterday, and nothing at all tracks Claude or Grok: not SE Ranking, not Semrush, not anyone.

So you measure it by hand, and the method is simple enough to run yourself.

Write down 15 to 20 prompts a real buyer would type. Not "best AI marketing agency Melbourne". The way someone actually asks: I run a plumbing business in Brunswick, who should I use for Google Ads? Run each one across ChatGPT, Gemini, Perplexity and Google's AI Overviews. Record two things per prompt: were you named, and were you linked. Date it. Repeat monthly.

It takes about ninety minutes. It produces a number that can't be massaged, which is exactly why most agencies don't offer it.

If you'd like us to run that baseline on your business, that's the free AI visibility audit: twenty prompts, four engines, dated, and you keep the results whether or not you work with us. For the service side, our AI marketing and SEO pages set out how we approach it.

Frequently Asked Questions

What is AI SEO?

AI SEO is the work of getting your business named and linked inside AI-generated answers from ChatGPT, Google AI Overviews, Gemini, Perplexity and similar systems. It is conventional SEO plus three additions: access for AI crawlers beyond Googlebot, consistent business information across every profile that describes you, and content structured so a model can extract a passage cleanly.

Is AI SEO different from normal SEO?

It overlaps heavily. The technical foundation is identical: crawlable, fast, well-structured pages with real authority behind them. What's different is crawler access for non-Google bots, indexing in Bing as well as Google, entity consistency through sameAs markup, and writing direct answers that can be lifted out of context. Treat it as an extension, not a replacement.

Do I need an AI SEO agency, or can I do this myself?

The highest-return items are genuinely self-serve: check your robots.txt and firewall for AI crawlers, submit your sitemap to Bing Webmaster Tools, make your business details identical everywhere, and put a direct answer under each heading. That's most of the value. Agencies earn their fee on the harder parts: third-party corroboration, entity building and the monthly measurement.

How long does AI SEO take to show results?

Three to six months is the realistic window for ChatGPT, which refreshes its understanding of a business slowly. AI Overviews can move faster because it draws on Google's live index, sometimes within weeks of a strong page being published. Nobody controls the timing, and any agency quoting a guaranteed date is describing something they can't deliver.

Can anyone guarantee a number one ranking on ChatGPT?

No. AI systems are non-deterministic. Run the same prompt twice and you can get different businesses named. A guarantee of a specific position in an AI answer is a claim about something nobody controls, and under Australian Consumer Law that's exposure the agency is handing you rather than taking on.

Which AI engine should an Australian business prioritise?

Google's AI Overviews, by a wide margin. In our October 2026 data, AI Overviews produced thirteen times the link citations that ChatGPT did for the strongest Australian marketing agency in the set. ChatGPT is the one clients ask about by name; AI Overviews is where the volume is, and the work that wins it also wins ordinary Google rankings.

How do I know if AI tools are blocking or ignoring my site?

Check two places. Your robots.txt should allow GPTBot, OAI-SearchBot, Google-Extended, PerplexityBot and ClaudeBot at minimum. Then check your firewall or CDN. Several hosts enabled AI-bot blocking by default and it doesn't appear in robots.txt. After that, search site:yourdomain.com.au on Bing; thin results mean ChatGPT has little to work with.

Does AI SEO work for small local businesses?

Often better than for large ones, because citation competition in local Australian categories is still thin. The prerequisite is having something worth citing: a real site, genuine reviews, and some mentions you don't control. Without those, there's nothing for a model to assemble into an answer about you.

What is llms.txt and do I need one?

It's a proposed plain-text file at the root of your site that summarises what the business does and lists your important URLs, intended to help language models understand you. Adoption is voluntary and no major AI provider has committed to reading it. It costs an hour to write and may do nothing. Do the crawler access and Bing indexing first.

How much of AI SEO is just good SEO?

Most of it. Our honest estimate is that around three-quarters of what moves AI visibility is work that also improves conventional rankings: technical health, clear page structure, authority and third-party mentions. The remaining quarter (non-Google crawler access, Bing indexing, entity alignment and extractable phrasing) is the genuinely new part, and it's the part worth asking an agency to specify in writing.
